Background alone is not enough — the quality of post-service instruction matters equally.

CERTIFIED EXECUTIVE PROTECTION TRAINING Prior service does not automatically qualify an agent for executive protection work. Legitimate EP training must cover advance work and threat assessment, route planning and motorcade operations, protective intelligence, emergency medical response, and dignitary protection protocols. Certifications from the Executive Protection Institute (EPI) or ASIS International (CPP) are recognized benchmarks. A state guard card is the legal floor — not a qualification.

CURRENT LICENSURE AND COMPLIANCE

Any agent operating commercially must hold a current, valid state guard card for the jurisdiction they're working in. In Nevada and Hawaii, this means a current guard card, firearms qualification where applicable, liability insurance coverage, and a clear federal and state background check. Request copies of all certificates. Any hesitation to provide them is disqualifying.

DEMONSTRATED DISCRETION

Your security agent will be present in your most private environments. Non-negotiables include: zero social media references to clients or deployments, professional presentation appropriate to luxury environments, and the emotional intelligence to manage threat environments without creating anxiety for the principal.

PHYSICAL AND TACTICAL READINESS

A close protection agent must be physically capable of sustained protective action. This means a documented training program, current CPR and first aid certification, and close-quarters combat (CQC) proficiency — not just familiarity.

Known principals, publicized locations, and large crowds in one place require more than a security guard at the door. Here's how to hire correctly.

STEP 1: DEFINE THE THREAT BEFORE THE BUDGET

The most common mistake: starting with a number and working backward. Before budgeting, answer these questions — Who are the principals requiring protection? Is the event public or invitation-only? Has the company received any credible threats in the past 90 days? Are there contentious corporate actions running concurrently (restructuring, terminations, litigation)? Are there protest risk factors? The answers determine whether you need one specialist or a full layered security architecture.

STEP 2: ENGAGE A FIRM WITH EVENT-SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE

Not all EP firms are equipped for corporate event environments. Event protection requires skills distinct from residential or transit work: crowd dynamics management, multi-principal coordination, venue advance capability, and seamless integration with event staff and venue security — all while maintaining a presence that does not disrupt the guest experience.

STEP 3: REQUIRE AN ADVANCE SITE SURVEY

No reputable EP firm will quote or staff a corporate event without first conducting a physical advance of the venue. This covers all entry and exit points, VIP access routes, medical facility proximity, emergency egress, communication infrastructure, and coordination with existing venue security. If a firm skips the advance — walk away.

STEP 4: BUILD AN OPERATIONAL PLAN

Every principal's movement through the venue must be mapped in advance. The op plan defines arrival and departure routes, holding room locations, principal positioning during sessions, and defined response protocols for soft confrontations, media intrusion, and hard security events.

STEP 5: BRIEF THE FULL EVENT TEAM

Security does not operate in isolation. Venue staff, AV technicians, event coordinators, and catering all require a security brief appropriate to their role — including access protocols, communication chains, and evacuation procedures.

THREAT ASSESSMENT AND PROTECTIVE INTELLIGENCE

Before a specialist stands beside a principal, the threat must be defined and continuously monitored. This includes OSINT monitoring for mentions of the principal and their enterprise, tracking threat actor behavior (disgruntled employees, litigants, online targeting), assessing geopolitical and local threat environments before travel, and coordinating with corporate security teams on insider threat indicators.

ADVANCE WORK

Before any principal movement, the destination environment is surveyed systematically. This covers physical reconnaissance of venues and hotels, identification of primary and emergency egress routes, mapping of nearest medical facilities, establishment of communication protocols with venue security, and a full brief for all team members before arrival.

PROTECTIVE DETAIL OPERATIONS

Day-to-day operations include: secure transport coordination and motorcade management, venue entry and exit control, formation protection relative to the principal based on threat level, counter-surveillance (identifying surveillance attempts before they mature), access control and management of who approaches the principal, and crowd navigation in public environments.

RESIDENTIAL AND ESTATE SECURITY

For principals with residential security requirements: perimeter integrity through regular patrols and access point monitoring, visitor protocol management, staff vetting support, electronic security coordination (CCTV, alarm systems, access control), and emergency response planning for fire, medical, and intrusion scenarios.
